NALLAN
History. Culture. Comfort.
Some stories begin with a name. Ours begins with a sound. The sound of wooden soles crossing a stone courtyard. A pair of slippers waiting beside the door. A mother moving through the house, busy with the countless little things that made a home feel like home. For generations, these familiar wooden-soled slippers were known as nallane. They belonged to everyday life, worn by women whose days were filled with work, family and movement. Many of us remember them through our grandmothers, although the story of the nallane reaches much further back. Much further than we might imagine.
Centuries before NALLAN became a brand, related words and forms of footwear were already part of life across the Middle East and the Mediterranean. In historical Persia, na'layn was used for a form of slipper, often made from leather. In the Ottoman world, nalın became the name associated with wooden-soled footwear, particularly familiar in traditional bathhouses and homes. Some pairs were made for ordinary use, while others were carved, decorated and carefully finished, reflecting the customs and craftsmanship of their time. The tradition extended into southeastern Europe. In Greece, wooden clogs were part of Ottoman-era bathing culture, and examples of this footwear remain part of the country's historical collections. Across the Balkans, local craftsmen adapted similar designs to the needs and habits of their communities.
In Albanian, the wooden-soled slipper became known as nallane. The word settled into everyday language, and the footwear became part of household life. It was easy to slip on, practical for its surroundings and familiar enough to be remembered long after the customs around it began to change.
There is something fascinating about an object so ordinary carrying such a long history. Its shape evolved from place to place, and its name changed as it passed between languages and culture. Yet wherever it appeared, it remained closely connected to the people who wore it.
The women who made it part of life
Ask someone who remembers traditional nallane, and the conversation often turns to family. A grandmother preparing lunch. A mother tending the courtyard. The sound of wooden soles on the floor. A pair left near the entrance, ready for the next task. These memories say something about the lives of earlier generations, particularly women whose days involved constant movement. Cooking, cleaning, caring for children and maintaining the household demanded time, energy and long hours on their feet. The nallane belonged to those routines. Made from materials available at the time, they offered a practical and accessible form of footwear. Their simplicity was part of their usefulness, while the work of local craftsmen gave each pair its shape and character.
Some were decorated and worn as part of traditional dress. Others were made for the ordinary demands of the day. Both tell a story about the relationship between craftsmanship, culture and everyday needs.
For the people who grew up around them, nallane still evokes a sense of familiarity. The memory lives in old photographs, family conversations and the small details of homes that have changed over time.
That is the history behind the name we carry today.
Three generations, one family craft
The family behind NALLAN has been making footwear for three generations. What began as traditional shoemaking developed into a family business built on practical knowledge: how to work with leather, how to shape a sole, how materials respond to movement and how small details can influence the comfort of a finished shoe.
These are skills learned through experience. A shoemaker develops an eye for proportion, an understanding of materials and a sense of what makes a pair feel right. Over the years, that knowledge was passed from one generation to the next, refined with every new design and every improvement in the making process. New machinery, production methods and materials opened the door to greater precision and new possibilities in design.
The family's experience continues to shape NALLAN today. Skilled hands remain involved in the production and finishing of the footwear, working alongside contemporary technology. The choice of materials, the construction of the sole and the attention given to fit all reflect the practical understanding developed over decades.
Three generations have contributed to the craft, each building on what the previous one learned.
The name was waiting for us
When the family introduced its new footwear brand in 2022, the inspiration came from a word it had known all along. Nallane. Removing the final letter gave it a new form: NALLAN. The name was short, distinctive and easy to carry across languages, while keeping its connection to the footwear that had been part of the world’s and region's history for generations. It also holds a curious detail. NALLAN reads the same forwards and backwards. This symmetry reflects the balance the brand seeks between inherited craftsmanship and contemporary design.
The old wooden-soled nallane had served the practical needs of earlier generations. NALLAN carries that understanding into modern footwear, shaped by new materials, anatomical design and the expectations of people living and working today.
The feeling that matters
Think about how much of life happens on our feet. A nurse moving between patients during a long shift. A chef preparing for the evening rush. A teacher standing in front of a classroom. A pharmacist behind the counter. A parent moving through a busy day, or someone simply enjoying a walk through the city. We rarely think about our feet when we feel comfortable. We notice them when our footwear begins to distract us. That everyday experience is central to the way NALLAN approaches design. Anatomically shaped footbeds follow the natural contours of the foot. Cushioning is incorporated to make each step feel softer, while supportive construction and carefully selected materials contribute to a comfortable wearing experience. Leather, nubuck and other textiles are chosen with attention to their feel, appearance and suitability for everyday use. The aim is straightforward: footwear that feels good to put on and remains pleasant to wear as the day unfolds.
Comfort also has to fit the way people dress. NALLAN combines practical construction with contemporary styling, creating footwear suited to different routines, from working hours to time spent at home, travelling or enjoying the weekend.
And because good footwear should be part of everyday life, the brand pays equal attention to value. Thoughtful materials, experienced craftsmanship and modern production help NALLAN pursue a balance between quality, comfort and fair pricing.
From familiar doorsteps to European streets
Today, NALLAN is becoming part of new routines across Europe. A pair might be worn through a busy day in Copenhagen, during a shift in Berlin, on a weekend in Zagreb or around the streets of Stockholm. The people wearing them may have different backgrounds and may never have heard the word nallane before. What brings them to NALLAN is something immediately familiar: the pleasure of putting on footwear that feels right.
There is a long history behind that simple feeling. It reaches back through the traditions of the Mediterranean and the Balkans, through the homes of our mothers and grandmothers, and through three generations of a family devoted to shoemaking.
Today, that experience finds its place in contemporary design, with comfort at the heart of every collection. The old nallane accompanied earlier generations through their everyday lives. NALLAN carries that spirit into the present, creating footwear for the many places life takes us.
